As long as you have a security team that can defend the island, this is as far away as you can get from those who would try to take your resources for themselves. Aside from their obvious security benefits, private islands have long been a status symbol. According to some expert estimates, there are only 2,000 islands that can be developed. The rest are too far from land or connected to countries that are already unstable and chaotic. Richard Branson, David Copperfield, Celine Dion, and Johnny Depp count themselves among the elite island owners, as does Oracle’s CEO Larry Ellison, who dropped $500M to purchase the entire Hawaiian island of Lana’i.

Owning a private island means experiencing breathtaking 360-degree views, the highest possible degree of privacy, and a higher chance of surviving the apocalypse. It also means you’ll need to handle maintenance needs beyond anything you’ve ever previously encountered. These are some of the most common questions about owning your own private island.

 

Can I Start My Own Country?

After TEOTWAWKI, when it comes to the law all bets are off. However, as things stand right now, chances are you will not be able to claim sovereignty. There are virtually no islands that are not claimed by a national government. If you want to be a sovereign nation, your best bet is to look for an island that is controlled by a poor, corrupt government. Their officials may be willing to take your cash regardless of the laws.

 

Will I Still Have to Pay Taxes?

You will still need to pay the taxes of any country that controls your private island, at least for now. Once the governments have collapsed, that will no longer be an issue. Look into the tax laws of the country before you consider purchasing any private island property.

 

How Are Islands Financed?

If you want to buy an island, you’ll need to pay cash up-front, because banks won’t grant you a loan. This is due to the fact that it is difficult for banks to establish the value of the island due to the large number of variables that need to be considered and can change at any moment. Because these properties are so scarce, chances are the bank won’t be able to find one near yours to use for comparison.

What to Look for When Choosing an Island

By understanding the features and conditions you should be looking for during your island search, you’ll increase your chances of ending up with the right property for your needs. This checklist is your starting point.

When choosing a private island property, look for…

  • A lightly developed property. If it’s too developed, you won’t have space to realize your own vision for the island. If it’s undeveloped, you may have difficulty getting permits to develop it.
  • A property with a source of fresh water. With a fresh water source on your island, you won’t have to worry about where your water will come from—just making sure it’s purified.
  • An island with access to electricity. This may not matter after the SHTF, as no one else will have power, either. Just keep in mind it won’t be cheap to transport generators to the island. You can also use solar power, but that’s also going to be very expensive and require permits if it’s not already in place.
  • Something that is not too remote. You want to be far away enough that it won’t be easy to discover your island or to invade it, but if it’s too remote you might find it very difficult to get supplies after you’ve run out.
  • An island that is near an airport. If the airport is still operational after the grid goes down, this will be a huge bonus. You’ll also want to make sure you choose an island that is large enough to house a runway if you’re going to go the private airport route.

The biggest thing to keep in mind is if you own an island, you’ll need to be prepared to handle the environment, maintenance, travel, security, and more. Anything can happen, and after the SHTF, it probably will. Would You Trust This Man with Your Life?

A feud between two luxury bunker builders has brought up some disturbing points.

Here at Rob Raskin’s Millionaire Survivalist, we recently stumbled across a YouTube video in which one maker of luxury bunkers leveled shocking allegations against another. Did Rising S Bunkers really cause one of their customers to go to prison for three years, or are these baseless accusations that are part of a long-standing feud between owner Clyde Scott and his competitor Atlas Survival Shelters, which is owned by Ron Hubbard.

Claims Against Rising S

According to a video Hubbard posted on Atlas’s YouTube channel, the story began when he received the following letter, which we’ve very slightly edited for clarity:

Ron, my name is Steve Prewit. I own a corporation in Midland, Texas, and I am also a professional drag boat driver. In 2012, I made the mistake of doing business with Clyde Scott of the Rising S company. I lost $250K and received 33 months in federal prison. (My story is) beneficial to your business. If you would like to what I have to say, please give me a call.

Ron then went on to claim the information he learned after he spoke to Prewit was so explosive that he sat on it for a year before finally deciding to go public. He describes this decision as “fighting back against a bully and punching him in the mouth.” He then went on to describe Rising S’s business model as being based on “ruining” their competitors. Hubbard alleges that Scott has personally taken actions that were meant to destroy Atlas Survival Shelters.

Is Clyde Scott a bully? During our investigation into the matter, we compared these two luxury bunker building companies to try to determine the truth behind the scandal.

 

According to Prewit’s claims, he lost $1.5M and five years of his life after hiring Rising S Bunkers to build a shelter. Prewit alleges Scott set him up to be busted by the feds after seeing Prewit’s cache of illegal weapons, which included guns that were unregistered and had been illegally modified.

In the summer of 2012, Prewit gave Scott $250K to build a bunker. During its construction, Scott observed Prewit firing and selling these weapons. He further claims Scott “rolled on him” to the FBI, falsely claiming to them that Prewit had a 40-man militia that called him “Colonel.” The next time they came out they had an FBI agent among their crew members. Prewit ended up spending 33 months in federal prison.

Prewit said he hired a private investigator who turned up evidence that Clyde Scott is a convicted felon with a lengthy record. He avoids prison time by being a “snitch.” He believes Scott made up a story about him and ratted him out to the FBI because the government is using him to get information. As proof, Prewit and Hubbard showed a printout of Scott’s criminal record.

 

While this is clearly proof that Scott has committed crimes in the past, it is not clear if Prewit has any clear evidence that he is the informant that led to his arrest.

In an interview with Hubbard, Prewit said he came forward with his story not for his own sake, but rather for the safety of the public, who needs to know that this situation is a possibility.

 

Which Bunker Builder Can You Trust?

While we can’t make a definitive statement regarding which company—or if either of them—are in the right or whether or not the allegations against Clyde Scott are true, this situation brings up some more troubling issues.

Luxury bunker builders and their teams know where everyone’s bunkers are located. If they’re not trustworthy, who is to say they won’t come to take what you have after TEOTWAWKI? Is it possible that some of them could be underhanded enough that they are secretly building your shelters for their own future use and planning to use your supplies, all while making money off of you for the privilege?

Our investigation unearthed plenty of complaints lodged against Atlas Survival Shelters as well. One consumer claimed to have lost $100,000 after a faulty shelter flooded. When they approached Ron about the problem, they claim he became belligerent. Hubbard, however, had a different take on the situation. He claims these dissatisfied customers improperly installed their own bunker after purchasing it from him.

 

The truth is, none of the luxury shelter companies have spotless reputations. Someone is always going to be unhappy, and some of these complaints will be legitimate while others will not. Watch out for warning signs like builders who won’t give you an estimate yet are eager to get you to pay a deposit and sign a contract.

In his video, Ron recommends whenever possible purchasing a bunker and hiring your own team to transport and install it for your own personal security. This is clearly the best option at this point, and it’s not surprising he would recommend this now that he believes consumers who are buying shelters are potentially in danger due to unethical business practices.

If you’re thinking about having a bunker built one thing is certain, and that’s the importance of doing your research before you hire any company.

Welcome to Subterra Castle

This is an upscale missile silo shelter like no other.

Shawnee County, Kansas’s Subterra Castle is considered to be the world’s first missile silo home, and you’ll never see another survival shelter like it.

 

Ed Peden and his wife Dianna originally purchase their decommissioned Atlas E missile base in the early nineties, and they have been living on the property since 1994. At the time, the couple was known to be the only Americans living in a decommissioned silo, though we all know that is no longer the case.

 

From the moment you approach the castle and see its turrets, you know this is not your average survivalist shelter. Instead, it may just be the most fun place in the world to go after TEOTWAWKI. This week, Rob Raskin’s Millionaire Survivalist is taking a closer look at what makes this underground missile silo shelter so special and how you can get one of your own.

 

The Castle’s Transformation

In an interview with Roadside America, Ed Pedens described removing “hundreds of wheelbarrows of crap,” from the property, along with sheet rock that had actually melted to the floor. Unbelievably, when Ed first toured the silo, he had to do so in a canoe because the underground portion of the property was filled with nine feet of water.

 

Today, the transformation this missile silo has undergone is simply incredible. The Pedens put decades of work into the property, which sits on 34 secluded acres in an undisclosed location approximately 25 miles outside of Topeka, Kansas. The result is a truly unique property, with features you won’t find in any other shelter like a ceremonial stone circle, a recording studio, and a wood-fired outdoor sauna.

 

Features

A half-mile paved driveway leads you into the property, which is surrounded by a security fence and has two observation towers. When it comes to self-sustainability, you’ll be covered here. On the grounds, you’ll find a three-room, 450-square-foot cabin. Also on the property are a one-acre stocked pond with a dock and a sand beach, along with an outdoor fire pit.

 

Some other features of the exterior of the silo include a 1,700-foot air strip, an RV hookup, cistern water storage, a chicken house, and plenty of spaces for gardening.

 

Regarding the interior of the property, it’s hard to believe there is so much going on under the ground here. There is a 6,500-square-foot, three-level underground home with four bedrooms and three sleeping nooks, a library and study, domestic and commercial kitchens, a diesel generator, and two bathrooms, along with a two-story apartment.

There is also an underground hot tub, a reverse osmosis water system, and a passive solar greenhouse entry. There are also 150 feet of underground entry tunnels. The drive-in “garage” door weighs 47 tons, and it took Pedens 25 years to open it for the first time.

 

You Can Own an Underground Castle

Today the Pedens help others to make their dreams of owning an Atlas F missile silo home come true. The couple are the owners of 20th Century Castles, a company that specializes in the acquisition and sales of missile bases and other underground structures. Currently, they are offering an underground silo in Central Kansas in the $300K to $499K price range.

 

This property is 19 acres of breathtaking, rolling landscape. Ten acres of the property are surrounded by a high, secure fence. You’d never know it from the scenery, but under the ground lies a concrete silo that is 52 feet across and 175 feet deep.

 

What was once the property’s launch control center is now a luxurious 2,600-square-foot living space, with three bedrooms, 2 ¾ bedrooms, a spiral staircase, fireproof construction, vault-like security doors, and a relaxing whirlpool tub. The property also comes with a water well, dual sewage pumps, and a geothermal heat pump that has dual water heaters, and much more.

 

This property is in need of repairs, but for a buyer with plenty of cash to invest, the end result can be as stunning as the castle.

The shelter would have offered over 2,000-square-feet of living space, with premium amenities that went far beyond anything the California. Vivos community has to offer, including an indoor skate park and golf course.

After investing “hundreds of thousands of dollars” on engineering, the project was abandoned due to its location within an abandoned limestone mine, which was eventually deemed to be unsafe. The project struggled to attract investors and in the end never was able to build the kind of momentum something of that scale would require in order to get off the ground—or, in this case, under it.

Of the failed endeavor, Vicino appears to have chalked the failure up to a simple, “Some ideas work out, and some don’t.” The developer is now putting his energy into new luxury survival communities, including one in Indiana.

The proof that Vivos intends for its current community to survive in the long-term and not just the immediate fallout of a catastrophic event lies in its DNA vault. This company is serious about helping the people who reside in their shelters to live comfortably while they continue the species. Sounds like a worthwhile goal to us.

Whether or not it will work out the way Vivos has planned in a real-life disaster situation remains to be seen.

Luxury missile silo for sale with its own airstrip and private hangar

Much of the Southwest is desert, a climate many people believe is not ideal for survival. However, this isn’t true if you’re educated and prepared. All throughout human history we have adapted to survive in the desert by becoming a part of its ecosystem. In the desert, you will find sources of food, water, and even medicinal plants all around you, if you know where to look.

 

Bruce Francisco is an Atlas F Missile Base specialist, and he’s got his own custom luxury silo to prove it. On his website, Francisco has described his construction team as the “builders of the most unique secure real estate in the world.” Although he is currently occupying his custom Upstate New York silo, he also owns the missile silo site in the Southwest that he is ready to sell.

Francisco originally specialized in fix and flips, but then he had the opportunity to renovate the abandoned silo. After realizing he could land his plane on the old military road that sits on the property, Francisco originally intended to build his house on the property, having no idea what he’d do with the missile silo below. Then he decided, “Let’s do something crazy with this thing. Let’s build a cool home.” So he built a hangar and a private air strip, then decided to tackle the silo.

 

Details of the Southwest Property

This unique property is currently available in an undisclosed location, which shows that the builder takes security seriously.  The price of this Atlas F Missile Base is not specified, but the owner/builder, Bruce Francisco, can customize the site to your needs, for a price.

 

To build a structure on the surface would be $375K to $800K. To transform the property into a low-cost carrier airline site will run you $450K to $1M. The cost to transform the missile silo tube into an underground paradise that can hold up to 70 people for five years? $4M to $20M.

 

This property sits on 18 acres of land that, while remote, is also just a 15 minute drive from the city and Home Depot. One major benefit of the Southwest location is the silo tube is clean and dry. Most of these tubes have been breached by water at some point, with accompanying damage, making this a huge plus for this particular property.

 

Some of the other features of this Southwest Atlas F Missile Base include:

  • A clean, painted LCC
  • Water rights that have been grandfathered back to 1920
  • A two-mile paved easement that is wide enough to become a runway for your private jet
  • Extremely low taxes

 

About Atlas-F Sites

Atlas-F Series Missile Base sites were built during the Cold War, and they were designed to take a direct nuclear hit, making them ideal for survivalists. These sites were deliberately constructed far from heavily populated areas so when the Russians attacked, the bombs would not be aimed at big cities that would have high casualty rates. This is exactly where you’d want to be after the SHTF.

 

These properties have an above-ground launch control center that features 2,300-square-feet of finished space. This means there is plenty of room in this space alone for a typical open floor plan home with a full kitchen, two master suites, and a spacious private bathroom. However, with that much space, you could easily customize the property into any configuration that works for your situation.

The property can be powered by generators and solar power, and it is surrounded by three-foot-thick epoxy resin that is reinforced with concrete and steel mesh. It also comes with two wells, 200 amp electrical, phone and satellite capabilities, and an 1,800-gallon septic tank.

 

This missile silo has a constant climate of approximately 58 degrees, and it can be converted into condos or space for hydroponic gardening. As you can see, this property has incredible potential. Francisco and his team are able to install video surveillance equipment that will give you a full 360 degree view of the surface.

For $595,000, You Can Buy a Survival Shelter Online

If you want to buy an underground communications bunker in western Kansas to use as your SHTF shelter, you’ll need to act quickly because there won’t be anymore eBay after the grid goes down.

This Scott City, Kansas bunker offers an expansive floor plan, and with so much space it would be easy to develop it into a luxury property. If you’re looking for a ready-made survival shelter with a ton of potential, this is it. If, that is, this is a real offer. The seller, officelistings, only joined eBay this past June, and their other listings are for low-priced office furniture. They are selling due to relocation and health reasons.

 

The seller is asking $595,000 or best offer, and in the listing he mentions, “Thought we had this sold, fell through so I am relisting my site again…” The seller mentions the site is a “must-see,” however, they will not send any plans or other detailed information until after they have vetted any potential buyers due to security reasons. This is a smart move, because making this information public will lower the site’s overall value.

Kansas Survival Statistics

Here at Rob Raskin’s Millionaire Survivalist, we have written about the underground luxury survival condo project in Kansas in the past. The state is a popular destination for survivalists due to its current laws and low population density. It is legal to homeschool in Kansas, and the state doesn’t have the draconian gun laws other states are currently imposing.

 

SurvivalBlog.com has placed Kansas 12th on their list of western states with the greatest retreat potential, and Boston’s Gun Bible has placed the state 13th for gun law rankings. Combine this with being the state with the 10th longest growing season, and it’s easy to see why so many preppers would choose Kansas for their survival destination.

 

The state of Kansas has a population of 2.6 million, with a population density of 31.7 per square mile. Compared to someplace like California, which has a population of 39,776,830, and a population density of 255 per square mile, and you can see that you’ll have a lot less competition for resources.

 

Here are a few of the drawbacks of sheltering in Kansas, according to SurvivalBlog.com.

  • There is little crop diversity
  • The state is prone to tornados
  • There are few sources of firewood
  • The flat terrain may make it difficult to defend yourself

About the Kansas Facility

This “VIP bomb shelter” is zoned commercially, but it is possible to have it rezoned as residential or agricultural. After TEOTWAWKI, zoning laws won’t matter anymore, but they could affect how you choose to use the shelter now.

 

This site also comes with the mineral rights to the property, but that’s just the beginning of the benefits.

 

The History of the Shelter

This underground bunker was originally constructed in the 1960s at a cost that was equal to $4 million today. It was built as a base of operations for a power-feed station on a hardened transcontinental coaxial-cable route. This route extends from Airmont, New York to Mojave, California. Part of the facility has been developed into a data storage center, and part of it was developed into a VIP residential area for the technicians who worked at the site.

 

The property comes with a keypad and keycard access that will allow you to access the cameras installed around the perimeter and throughout the facility. These cameras can be remotely operated, so you can monitor the property even when you’re off-site.

 

The Shelter’s Features

The shelter sits upon approximately ten acres of land, and the underground portion of the space has approximately 8,000-square-feet of living space, with 3,800-square-feet of steel mezzanine that can be used as a second floor. Here’s what else it offers:

  • Walls and ceilings made of 18” – 24” reinforced military grade concrete and steel for EMP protection
  • A 177’ tower that can potentially be used to generate income
  • 5’ ceilings

  • Three-phase power that is currently on 120/208 but can be upgraded to 480
  • A back-up generator that is currently disconnected
  • A 2,000-gallon diesel fuel tank
  • A 10,000-gallon stainless steel water storage tank
  • A new well
  • A functional bathroom
  • Clean floors
  • Two sewage ejector pumps that feed into a double reduction sewage lagoon system

 

The listing states the owner may consider owner financing for buyers who have a significant down payment. Is this bunker a legitimate offer? Indiana Bunker You Can Buy Right Now

This particular base was designed to be large enough to contain a 41-foot Nike missile that would rise via a hydraulic elevator, and the fallout shelter on the site is large enough for the 100 soldiers who were once stationed there, along with a 60-day supply of food, water, and other supplies. The site was active until March 1970, when it was transferred to a private owner, who bought the launching area in 1979. This owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, is now ready to move on from the property after his wife’s passing.

About Project Nike and the Base

Project Nike was first proposed in May 1945, and it was named after Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. The goal of the project was to develop an anti-aircraft missile system. This is where many rocket technologies and systems were originally developed. A number of these were also named after the goddess, including the Nike Smoke rocket and the Nike Hercules missile.

 

Dillsboro’s Nike Missile Base # CD-63 was originally constructed in 1958, during the Cold War era. The base was one of three hundred that were built around the country’s major industrial and urban areas in 29 states, which were known as “Rings of Fire.” These were meant to protect these areas from the Soviets.

 

How powerful were the Nike Hercules missiles? So powerful they could be fired up to 150,000 feet. They were armed with nuclear warheads and designed to intercept enemy bombers that were 75 miles away. This was critical at the time because our country’s defense strategists believed the Soviets would—and could—send their bombers to the U.S.

 

In interesting bit of trivia about the base: on November 14, 1960, local newspapers reported that radars picked up a UFO in the skies above the base, an allegation a Nike executive officer later denied.

Nike Missile Base # CD-63 is located at 8854 State Route 262, Dillsboro, IN 47018. The property features 10 buildings and three missile silos, and it sits on 14.58 acres. Remember, these buildings were originally designed for military use, so they were built to last, using high-strength concrete that was considered at that time to be the top-of-the-line.

 

The house was converted in 1979, and there are still many elements of the seventies present, including gold swirl mirror tiles on the walls that surround the groovy hot tub and the vintage Corvette that sits near the swimming pool.

 

The fully-functional underground home also contains:

  • A 23’ x 14’ indoor swimming pool
  • An elevator
  • A sump pump
  • A sauna
  • Two bedrooms
  • A hot tub
  • A 14’ x 19’ aquarium, which is attached to the pool
  • Three horse stalls
  • 32’ x 40’ horse stables

  • Hay storage
  • A full bathroom
  • An eight-foot barbed wire fence
  • An above-ground auto shop
  • Many other features!

 

There are also two other missile silos on the property that are ready to be converted into living spaces. If you love a challenge, this fixer-upper will be the challenge of a lifetime—one that could end up being longer because of it after the SHTF.

 

The property is being represented by Jay Knowles of Keller Williams. Rob Raskin’s Millionaire Survivalist reached out to Mr. Knowles for more information about the property, but as of press time he has still not responded. In an article in the Indy Star, Mr. Knowles said he has a couple of buyers who have already shown interest.

Features

The Aventador can fly at 32 MPH and altitudes of up to 12,000 feet, thanks to its five gas turbine engines. This suit is comprised of a carbon fiber exoskeleton. It is assembled of 3D-printed parts, weighs 60 pounds and has a flying time of up to four minutes. It is rumored that Lamborghini is in development on an updated model that can stay in flight for up to nine minutes.

 

Although the price tag is hefty, Lamborghini throws in mandatory flight training for no extra charge.

You can get the Lamborghini Aventador jetpack from UK department store Selfridges for less than a half-million.

 

Jetpack Aviation’s Speeder $380,000

While not traditionally a jetpack in the sense that we imagine them, the Speeder is a flying motorcycle that is more in-line with what the future of personal flight will really look like.

 

Features

This is the most fun you’ll ever have riding a motorcycle, because you can take the Speeder to the skies for up to 20 minutes at a time, at speeds of up to 150 MPH, and at altitudes of up to 15,000 feet. In fact, this personal flight vehicle is so fast that it is capable of being used in racing. The Speeder features four turbojet engines, and together they put out an incredible combined maximum thrust of 705 lbf. You can use three different fuel sources: kerosene, diesel, or JetA.

 

The speeder can hold a passenger of up to 250 pounds, but it is not designed to hold a passenger. It comes with navigation, and it has an instrument light that will allow for night flight in areas where this is allowed. If it’s raining and you want to take the Speeder out for a flight, that’s no problem It’s designed to fly in light to moderate rain.

You can get the Speeder at the Jetpack Aviation website https://jetpackaviation.com/. Only 20 of these were developed for recreational use, with the rest going to the government and military. However, as you well know, money talks.

 

Martin Jetpack $100,000

The Martin Jetpack is closer to our culture’s traditional idea of a jetpack because it’s powered by two ducted fans that are strapped to your back.

 

Features

The Martin Jetpack only flies a few meters above the ground, but if that’s what you’re comfortable with this is a great starter model. It comes equipped with a ballistic parachute because this company takes safety seriously. If you were to experience engine failure mid-flight, thanks to this parachute you’d be able to glide safely back to earth.

 

This jetpack has a 200 hp, two-stroke, two-liter engine that works by blowing air downward at high velicity. It weighs 250 lbs. and has a cruise speed of 63 MPH. The Martin meets the FAA Part 103, Ultralight Regulations requirement, so you won’t need an FAA recognized pilot license to fly the friendly skies.

 

Where to Buy

For the time being, you can’t buy a Martin unless you find one available from a private seller. New Zealand’s Martin Aircraft Company has restructured, with rumors that they’ve been sold to a Chinese company. Will they take the technology to the next level? This remains to be seen, but let’s hope so.

Why We Don’t Have Jetpacks…Yet

Wondering where your jetpack is? You’re not alone.

It has long been believed that dreams of flight are a personal representation of power that signifies you are capable of doing anything. It’s no coincidence that people dream so often of having the ability to fly. If you are in a position of wealth and power, however, you may be able to make that dream reality with your own personal aerial vehicle, aka a jetpack.

 

From Buck Rogers’s degravity belt to George Jetson’s flying suit, as long as humans have been dreaming of ways to make flight possible, we have been imagining a future in which we zip around via jetpacks. Prolific writer and biochemist Isaac Asimov believed by the turn of the 21st Century we would all be traveling via jetpack, even going so far as to claim they’d be as common as travel by bicycle.

 

Now that we are living in the 21st Century, it’s obvious we aren’t commuting via the skyways. This has left many people wondering how much longer we’ll have to wait before we each have the ability to control our own sky travels.

 

To understand why we aren’t able to travel by jetpack yet and how far into the future such travel may be, we first need to understand the technology and why previous attempts at personal flight have failed.

 

The History of the Jetpack

The history of the jetpack can be traced back to 1919, when a German rocket scientist worked on inventing a jet powered vest for the US Army. This would be the first of many attempts to build a jetpack, the vast majority of which were halted due to a lack of funding.

 

Over the following decades, many inventors would injure themselves attempting to create a functional jetpack.

 

In 1961, Wendell Moore’s Bell Rocket Belt caused the engineer to break his kneecap after plunging 2.5 meters. When you consider that his rocket was powered by nitrogen gas that was converted into a steam explosion, a broken kneecap doesn’t sound all that bad.

 

Also in 1961, during the Bell Rocket Belt’s first public display, pilot Harold “Hal” Graham landed on his head after falling 6.7 meters, leading to his premature retirement.

 

Next to be injured was stunt pilot Kinnie Gibson, whose knee was smashed, leading to a lawsuit that spelled the end for the 90% oxygen that would be necessary to power a jetpack.

 

Today there are water-propelled hydrolift devices that function similarly to a jetpack but is run on hydrogen peroxide instead of rocket fuel. Google X considered developing a jetpack but ultimately decided against it after determining how impractical it would be.

 

Another company, Jetpack Aviation, has developed personal vehicles that are capable of vertical landings and takeoffs. Their JB10 can have you in the air for as many as four minutes. They plan to release an electric version of their vehicle this year. Whether or not it will work still remains to be seen.

 

Why We Don’t Have Jetpacks…Yet

Despite predictions that we’d all have jetpacks by now, there’s a very good reason we don’t. A couple of them, actually: gravity and rocket engines.

 

Gravity

When it comes to the jetpack, the issue is not so much that what goes up must come down as it is how long we can stay in the air. This all comes down to Newton’s law of mechanics, which states that to get off the ground you’ll need to use enough force to cancel out the gravity that is holding you to the earth. While this is clearly possible in a large aircraft that can hold plenty of fuel, it’s simply not possible with something the size of a jetpack.

 

Perhaps in the future when we’ve advanced to the point that we can use alternate fuel sources that weigh less, this will change.

 

Rocket Engines

When we imagine jetpacks, we’re picturing a specific vision of a rocketeer in flight—one with the rocket’s engine strapped to his back. Now that you understand how much fuel it would take to counteract gravity and leave the earth, imagine how hot the flame blasting out of that rocket jet would be. It would be like holding a blowtorch to your legs, which you wouldn’t have for long if you remained in flight. In other words, the vision we have for what traveling by jetpack could look like is not ever going to be our reality.

 

But that doesn’t mean all hope is lost.
